Would you be surprised to find out that most of the cutting edge technologies, developments, procedures and surgeries are not developed in the United States?  Do you remember the first successful heart transplant?  It didn’t occur in the United States, but Cape Town, South Africa in the late 1960s. Since then, cardiac transplantation is in the top five most commonly performed organ transplants in the United States. South Korea’s scientists are among the leaders in stem cell research, as is stem cell research development in Japan and other Asian countries. Laser assisted vision correction, also known as LASIK, was pioneered in Germany in the mid 1980s, but was not available in the United States until the mid 1990s.

Why does it take so long for treatments and procedures to be accepted in the United States? Most commonly, because most procedures, medications, and medical protocols need to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). While the safety of such technologies and drugs are essential, individuals seeking the benefits of stem cell research must travel to Mexico, Asia, Europe or Central Europe for treatment.

The growing trend in medical tourism is caused by an increasing dissatisfaction with the healthcare system in the United States, as well as Britain and Canada.  Medical procedures in orthopedics, cardiac care or cardiology, obesity, and degenerative diseases are being studied, researched and treatments developed in locations such as EmCell, located in Kiev, Ukraine, ProgenCell, located in Tijuana, Mexico, and Integra Medical Center, located in Tamps, Mexico, just south of the Texas border.

Until such procedures are placed on the fast track within the FDA, travelers from the United States will be venturing to destinations such as Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Mexico, and Central European destinations for immediate and effective, affordable medical care.

No one likes to hear the word ‘Cancer’, but unfortunately, thousands of people are diagnosed with some form of cancer every month. Liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer are among the most common. Cancer prevention information is making some headway with encouraging cancer awareness, but too often the  diagnosis comes too late. That’s why annual checkups are so important. When caught early enough, treatments for cancer can help individuals beat the disease and offer hope for a future. One of the most common forms of cancer treatment used today is chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy, or Chemo for short, is a procedure that is commonly used to treat cancer in a patient. It can be performed before or after a surgery, and is designed to remove cancerous cells or tumors. The procedure can also be performed on an individual who is undergoing radiation therapy. Some doctors  use chemotherapy alone, depending on the severity of the cancer.

Unfortunately, chemotherapy drugs are horrendously expensive in the U.S. and may cost upward of $5,000 a month! And just as unfortunately, many individuals diagnosed with cancer must make a choice of either obtaining the expensive treatment and losing their financial security or choosing not to treat. No one should have to make that choice.

Thankfully, there are facilities outside the U.S. where Americans can receive superlative cancer treatment at a fraction of the cost of domestic care. Places like the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Thailand, or the EmCell Clinic in Kiev, Ukraine are just a couple of the multiple medical tourism destinations found abroad that offer cutting-edge technologies and procedures for the treatment of many different types of cancer.

Whether you’re going for fun, the history, health tourism or any combination of the three, the Ukraine is a great place to visit. It’s one of the oldest and largest countries in Europe that enjoys great geographical, historical and architectural landmarks. These days, people go for exotic vacation destinations not only to relax, but also to enjoy cheap but professional medical procedures like plastic surgery.

The Ukraine is not very different from other great European countries as far as medical standards are concerned, so you need not worry about putting your health at risk by undergoing medical treatment in the Ukraine. However, the economics of the country allow more competitive prices than those of many other developed countries.

Medical treatment in Ukraine meets high standards of care and excellence and is one of the leading locations for stem cell research in middle Europe. Clinics in Ukraine offer treatments for stem cell therapy, anti-aging treatments, cancer and chronic disease treatments using a vast wealth of knowledge, not only culled from traditional medical practices, but from exciting developments in stem cell research.

The EmCell Clinic, located in Kiev, is one example of a world-renowned facility that offers not only some of the best surgeons in Ukraine, but affordable surgery in Kiev. Ukraine’s healthcare system offers cutting edge technology and the best health centers in Kiev that offer specialized services, comprehensive treatment plans and renowned quality of patient care in all of Europe.

Ukraine is where old meets new, and high-tech rules. Medical tourism in Ukraine offers only the best.

Human stem cell therapy is here to stay. Despite a rough start and controversy over ethical use of embryonic stem cells and cons of stem cell therapy such as worries over cloning, stem cell therapy research and development in the 21st century is focusing more on non-controversial methods of human stem cell collection, such as umbilical cord stem cell therapy and adult stem cell therapy approaches. The most commonly heard about today include:

· Embryonic stem cell therapy

· Adult stem cell therapy and research

· Umbilical cord stem cell therapy

Today, stem cell therapy research and development is growing by leaps and bounds. While stem cell gene therapy is being studied in the U.S., no stem cell replacement therapy has yet been offered here. However, numerous fine facilities that provide such treatments may be found in international destinations.

One of the closest is the facility of Dr. Omar Gonzalez, of the Integrative Medical Center in Tamps, Mexico. His facilities offer a different approach to treatment, including the use of American, European, and Chinese medical approaches. He specializes in stem cell therapy created through placenta stem cell based therapy. Both umbilical cord stem cell therapy and placenta stem cell therapy are considered ethical and non-controversial.

Another location, and perhaps a bit more exotic, are the facilities of EmCell in Kiev, Ukraine. With nearly two decades of experience in stem cell treatments, the clinic has to date offered human stem cell therapy for conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.

To date, no stem cells therapy options are available in the U.S., so many Americans travel to international destinations to benefits from stem cell treatment procedures. The U.S. has approved funding for Phase I clinical trials of some types of stem cell therapies that may provide productive and beneficial use in the near future.

The potential cost of stem cell therapy in the U.S. may be prohibitively expensive, leading most to seek cures for illnesses, injuries and disease processes in China, Thailand, Japan, Europe, such as the EmCell Clinic in Kiev, Ukraine and India for such care.

The cost of a stem cell therapy is determined by geographic location of treatment facilities as well as the injury, illness or disease being treated. Medical travelers should research and study human stem cell therapy, treatments and protocols in foreign destinations.

Questions to Ask:

  • Can you offer proof that these stem cell treatment therapies work?
  • Can I speak with former patients who have undergone such therapies?
  • Who are (and what are the credentials) of the physician or surgeon administering stem cell treatment?
  • How long has the organization offered such treatments?
  • How safe is the stem cell treatment? Are there risks involved?

The Future of Stem Cells Therapy

The World Stem Cell Summit in Madison, Wisconsin in September 2008 anticipated growing numbers of individuals seeking stem cell based therapy, alternative or advanced forms of medical treatment, and travel to foreign destinations. Everyone has a right to seek safe and effective treatments for dehabilitative injuries, diseases and terminal illnesses at affordable prices not currently found in the U.S.
