Fertility is a problem that affects many couples trying to get pregnant. The inability to conceive may cause emotional distress on many couples, but there are fertility treatments and procedures that may enhance your ability to have a child.

In the United States, fertility treatments may cost more than a couple can afford, but affordable infertility treatments and procedures are available around the world. Many such facilities are reliable, certified and accredited by domestic and international accrediting organizations like the JCI.

Facilities such as CEGYR, or Fertility Argentina, offer multiple methods of IVF treatments, while Jinemed Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey specializes in IVF, ICSI, PGD, IVM and Ovarian Cortex Freezing methods. Dr. Osama Badran, MD, FACOG, specializes in laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of conditions that may contribute to infertility in his practice in Amman, Jordan.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is more commonly known as Artificial Insemination.  Medication is given to a woman at a fertility treatment center to stimulate multiple egg development. Insemination, or insertion of sperm from the male partner, into the uterus usually increases chances of fertilization.

In vitro fertilization is a method that assists reproduction through the union of a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm in a laboratory dish. After fertilization has occurred, the embryo is transferred to the woman’s uterus for implantation and development of a normal pregnancy process.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a fertility treatment that has been used since the early 1990s, most often with couples where male factors such as low sperm count or poor sperm quality. The process involves the injection of a sperm directly into a mature egg.

A new year is on the way, encouraging many individuals to make changes in their lives. Such changes are personal, though they may affect dozens of family and friends. Individuals suffering from any type of addiction, such as prescription or street drug, alcohol, or behaviors such as phobias, panic disorders or general anxiety disorders (GAD) may benefit from a variety of rehab or rehabilitation treatments and therapies.

Physical rehabilitation is designed for individuals suffering from injuries such as fractures, stroke, amputations, spinal cord damage or dysfunction, cardiac conditions, and any other illness or injury that reduces mobility and function. The goal of physical rehabilitation is to increase range of motion, mobility, function and quality of life.

Emotional rehabilitation may be considered a form of psychiatric or psychotherapies, designed to help individuals overcome abuse, fears, and phobias.

Drug addiction rehabilitation and alcoholism rehabilitation begin with the process of detoxification, which basically reads the body of harmful and toxic substances before new lifestyle, habits and issues can be dealt with through group, drive it, or exposure type rehabilitative procedures, treatments and programs.

International facilities such as Terme Selce, Croatia, and Dr. Vorobiev’s Russian Rehab Clinic have helped individuals overcome a variety of addictive behaviors, as the Florence Nightingale Hospital in Turkey. Privacy, confidentiality and effective and long-term health and wellness are available for many. PlacidWay, a medical tourism portal in the U.S., offers in-depth research and information regarding rehabilitation treatments and facilities around the globe.

It’s time once again for end-of-year promises and New Year’s resolutions - which means self improvement and image repair. Consumers seeking cosmetic or plastic surgery to help restore breasts through breast augmentation or breast lifts, or those hoping to lose weight through liposuction, body sculpting or obesity and weight loss surgery such as bariatric surgical procedures, lap bands, gastric bypass or other techniques will be looking for cheap options to meet their goals.

However, remember that cheap isn’t always the bottom line when it comes to cosmetic surgery procedures. Yes, medical travelers can save thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars on cosmetic surgery in foreign destinations, not because standards or quality is lower, but because of different health care systems, lower malpractice and liability premiums and methods of practice in locations like Argentina, Turkey and Thailand, just to name a few.

Choosing a qualified plastic surgeon is of vital importance. The surgeon you choose should be a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or a Society of Plastic Surgeons in the country of origin. Surgeries should be performed in an accredited facility by certified surgeons experienced in their specialty. Physicians and surgeons should be willing to inform potential clients of their training, experience and education, and offer proof of such, no matter the foreign destination that is chosen. When it comes to cosmetic surgery, follow the same practice you would in your home country: ask for qualifications, experience and success rates. Don’t be shy. After all, it’s your body.

These days, with everyone tightening their belts, dental care issues (unless painful and immediate) generally get relegated to the bottom of the ‘to-do’ list. Unfortunately, dental and oral care is essential not only for fresh breath and white teeth, but to prevent gum or oral conditions like gingivitis, which may lead not only to jaw infection and bone loss, but also to systemic infection that may travel to the brain, lungs and other body organs.

While a visit to the dentist is not among the list of top 10 things that most people like to do, it is sometimes necessary for good oral health. Whether the reason for a visit to a dentist is for cosmetic or traditional, dental procedures such as implants, bridges, or dentures, techniques and methods offer a wide range of choices for dental needs in locations such as Turkey, Croatia, Singapore and Italy, just to name a few.

When looking for a dentist in places like Alfieri Dentista in Parma, Italy, or Dental Implants Croatia, in Dubrovnik, Croatia, or Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry in Mexico, it is important to make sure they are certified. Certification is offered through standards of the American Dental Association or other accredited dental association sub-specialty certification. Other countries typically require membership or certification through Dental Colleges. For example, in India, a dentist should be certified through the Dental Council of India. In Singapore, a dentist should be registered with the College of Dental Surgeons. Take the time to ask or find out about certification requirements any country you’re interested in.

Bariatric surgery is a catchall phrase for several different types of weight loss procedures and surgeries. Here are the basics:

Lap banding — Laparoscopic gastric banding (LAGB) is a process through which a silicone band, much like a rubber band, is placed around the entrance to the stomach.

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty — This procedure is commonly known as stomach stapling or VBG. Surgical staples are used to section off a small portion of the upper part of the stomach. The other side of this pouch is fitted with a band that slows the amount of time it takes for food to leave this pouch, which results in feelings of fullness after eating small amounts of food.

Sleeve Gastrectomy This type of procedure is generally performed on patients who have a body mass index over 50. It involves removing a portion of the stomach to create more of a sleeve rather than the pouch shape that the stomach has.

Gastric Bypass is a procedure results in dividing the stomach to create a small pouch that is directly attached to the small intestine. This pouch can only hold 1 ounce of food, though it may stretch in time to allow a person to eat about a cup of food at a time.

Obesity and weight loss surgical procedures in the U.S. are extremely expensive, but individuals traveling to foreign destinations can save thousands of dollars in excellent, certified facilities such as the Antiobesity Center in Cancun (yes!) Mexico to CTG Healthcare Group in Izmir, Turkey. Help is out there if you know where to look for reliable resources and information, such as PlacidWay, a quickly growing medical tourism and resource data center located in Denver, Colorado.

LASIK eye surgery is an outpatient procedure, with minimum complications. The procedure is a highly technical and effective technique that is able to eliminate significant visual impairment.  Both eyes can be done at the same time, although most surgeons require at least a few days in between. The procedure is relatively painless, and local anesthetic drops are used with a mild form of sedation. Some patients feel a need to sensation for a day or two afterward. LASIK eye surgery also replaces the use of scalpels in such a sensitive area of the body, reducing the number of complications that result from more traditional surgical procedures.

In the United States, LASIK eye surgery can run anywhere between $500-$1000 per eye. In most cases, vision insurance does not cover the procedure in the United States, although some vision care insurance companies are starting to add it to their policies.

However, international travelers may find great savings in cost for eye/Lasik care abroad, by searching for the best eye surgeons in Thailand, or for popular eye surgery hospitals in Costa Rica, or even the best eye care in Poland to the most affordable eye hospitals in Singapore, while still obtaining excellence and quality by visiting such destinations as the Ahalia Foundation Eye Hospital in Kerala, India or the Acibadem Healthcare Group in Istanbul, Turkey.

Corrective eye surgery is available for international medical travelers from Serbia to the Philippines, and from South Africa to Jordan and Guatemala. PlacidWay, an increasingly popular and resource for medical tourism, offers detailed profiles on such facilities, their treatments, costs and qualifications.
